Archidona is located northwest of the province of Malaga in Andalusia at an altitude of 600 meters in the Sierra de Gracia, an area with a rich environment, and outstanding beauty surrounded by olive groves, oak groves and cereal fields, 48 kilometers from the capital and 21 from Antequera. The town has two natural environments of great value: Las Lagunas de Archidona and Hoz de Marín. Moreover, its heritage has been declared historical. Archidona's origins go back to the Túrdulos. Later settlements have been found Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. The earliest archaeological remains found in the town belong to the Lower Paleolithic. Under Roman rule the town was called Arx Domina. Major archaeological sites are those of Cueva de Las Grajas, abrigos de la Escardadera, terrazas del Guadalhorce, La Hoya, Cortijo Catalán and Cerro Borbollones. Today Archidona is a mainly agricultural town and 9000 inhabitants.
