Almogia

ALMOGIA



Almogía is a village belonging to the Guadalhorce valley region. It has a population of 4000 inhabitants and is located only 24 kms from the capital of the province. It is therefore a strategic location between the Sierra de Antequera and Malaga Mountains, extending its territory from North to South. Its urban core consite in a grid of narrow streets and whitewashed houses reminiscent Arabic, located in the middle hill. To reach this area must take the A - 6113, and then take the exit road A -423.

The origin is uncertain and remote Almogía; will have found it remains in the area belonging to prehistory. Also found archaeological remains of the Roman age. Some argue that the real origin of Almogía is due to the tribe of al-mexies. Either way, it was during the Arab domination when it produces the most significant expansion of its urban core. During this stage the strength of Sancti Petri played a key role in defending Bobastro. The town was reconquered by the Catholic kings in 1487. In 1570 came the rebellion of the Moors. The Inquisition was very entrenched in this area, the large number of Moors who inhabited this area. Later still, during the War of Independence, Almogía and its castle were invaded by French troops.
